I’m an Aussie girl, born and raised in Perth, Western Australia and I’ve always had an avid love of reading.
You know those kids that you see sitting in the corner with their nose buried in a book? That was me.
Creativity has always been a part of my life, from when I was a kid with my Nanna teaching me how to turn clay on a potters wheel. Since then I participated in an Arts program in High School, and completed a certificate at TAFE. Then I got a job in a casino—slightly different?
YES, it was, but I got to meet some fantastic people and travel while working on the cruise ships. I was able to do and see things that I never would have though I'd do. The midnight sun in Norway for example or dive volcano craters in Hawaii, or with sharks in Bora Bora. It was on ships that I met my husband, and we decided to settle in Perth. Since then, I started an Art Degree at Curtin University part- time, got married and now have a gorgeous little boy.
When I had my epiphany, I began my research online and it was there that I came across the wonderful Mira Reisberg and the Children's Book Academy.
I completed The Craft and Business of Writing Children’s Picture Books, which I found full of practical information, while having the support of the amazing people who run the course. A big thank you to Mira, Mandy and Sudipta!
Since then, I have joined the SCBWI -Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators- and participated in as many writing challenges as I can! I've also managed to squeeze in a few Illustrator workshops which have been a lot of fun-- all in the aim perfecting my craft!
And yes, I am still working, studying and in my spare time, chasing after my muse, who is my little boy. Supermum? Hmmm, not sure…but what I do know is that I know what I want to do- - so I’m full steam ahead!
It was in Mira's course that the question was asked-
“Why do you want to write Picture Books?”
I want to put magic on a page- and I want to share that magic.
